Internal Communications
GT has invaluable experience supporting internal communications for both growing regional players and global firms with a large multi-jurisdictional workforce.
As an integrated communications agency, GT knows the importance of reaching internal audiences across multiple platforms, and the interplay between internal and external communications.
The Value of Internal Communications
Regardless of size, internal communications matter. While external communications often involve utilising firm commentary to secure a media mention, internal communications, particularly when done poorly, have the ability to generate wide-reaching headlines.
Understandably, much attention is paid to how key events, such as an acquisition, dismissal or taking a position, are communicated externally, whether to media or stakeholders.
However, equally as important is how these are communicated to the people within a firm – beyond the C-Suite. From asset managers to AI-enabled FinTechs, people and the talent they possess are always a firm’s greatest asset.
While a firm may refrain from commenting publicly on a development, internal updates, town halls or communiqués, often provide a wealth of information.
As a result, it is not surprising to see the contents of these appear in the press soon after they are released. Consistent messaging across a firm is therefore crucial and there’s a fine balance between constructing these for an internal audience, while keeping in mind how something may read in a public setting.
Internal communications done well can go a long way to making a firm’s people feel both informed and valued.
In addition, when one side of a global firm knows what is happening elsewhere in the business, it opens up greater opportunities for cross-selling and collaboration between different departments and practice areas, helping to foster a greater sense of belonging.
GT’s Approach to Internal Communications
GT takes a structured and co-ordinated approach to internal communications. Building from the ground up, we ensure close cooperation between both internal and external teams, while also including contributions from the wider marketing and business development departments in the process to help secure firm buy-in and eventually support rollout across the firm.
Workshops and brainstorming sessions can lay the foundation for the creation of a wider firm narrative and accompanying messaging. Once refined, comes the question of when and how to deploy these.
Rather than waiting for events to dictate action, GT looks ahead to map out potential situations when internal communications support will be required and begins initial preparations where possible. This often involves working closely with the C-Suite to draft leadership communications.
Meanwhile, helpful ‘toolkits’ enable a firm’s people to understand and successfully deploy the messaging both internally and externally with their clients and colleagues at all levels, independently of the communications teams.
The Greentarget team is comprised of a range of communications professionals, each bringing their own industry insight and abilities in support of a client’s internal communications.
Greentarget’s approach to internal communications is bolstered by our access to additional resource and a wider talent pool as part of the Selby Anderson Group, with experienced communications and internal marketing professionals backed up by in-house research and podcast / film production capabilities.
Former journalists
Our team includes former journalists from major publications such as The Economist and Financial Times, as well as leading trade media such as WatersTechnology. This experience enables Greentarget to advise clients on how their internal communications are likely to be perceived by an external audience (the media) should they invariably leak following distribution.
Multi-lingual team
A multi-lingual workforce is crucial to service global clients across jurisdictions. The Greentarget team speaks nine different languages, enabling us to translate and adapt messaging to local markets, while retaining the overarching narrative.
Policy/advisor experience
Greentarget has a strong track record of advising senior stakeholders on both internal and external communications. Our team can draw upon previous work in the policy space, including preparing speeches and content for public figures.
24/7 Offering
Whilst we prepare as much as possible for potential scenarios, sometimes the unexpected does happen. Greentarget offers a 24/7 service to clients. This means we are available and on hand to provide support whether in the form of counsel or drafting of internal leadership communications as needed.
Clyde & Co
Greentarget was engaged by global law firm Clyde & Co to improve the partners’ understanding of activity taking place across the firm. This included building out and embedding the ‘Strategic Risk Navigation’ narrative across firm internal communications, while supporting the in-house communications team with leadership communications and preparations for key events such as the UK Town Hall, MEA Partner conference and firmwide AGM.
Included within the content calendar was an informative internal podcast series exploring the changing risk landscape clients are facing and how the firm can help them navigate these risks. This involved the use of Greentarget’s in-house capabilities to edit the recordings and produce a finished product.
